Whale watching faqs

There are four species of whales that frequent the area: orcas, humpbacks, grays, and minkes.

There are 33 species of marine mammals and 172 species of birds in the area.

Orcas are here year-round! The other local species are migratory, so you have the best chance of seeing grays from February through May, humpbacks from May through November, and minkes from May through September.

You’re likely to see whales no matter what time of day you go out! Whales can travel up to 100 miles in a single day, so many times what we see on the morning trip will be completely different than the afternoon trip.

Our standard whale and wildlife adventures are 3-4 hours in length. Full day whale and wildlife adventures are 6-7 hours, which includes a 2 hour stop in Friday Harbor. In order to provide the best possible experience, we reserve the right to extend any tour by up to one hour if necessary. Please visit our tour pages for more information on each type of tour we offer.

Please arrive 30 minutes prior to your scheduled departure time so we can get you checked-in and prepared for the adventure!

There is plenty of parking in the paved lot directly in front of our office at Skyline Marina.

Sounder, our zodiac-style vessel, has a maximum capacity of 17 passengers. Wake, our semi covered vessel, carries a maximum of 6 passengers.

Yes! We offer private charters on both of our boats. Please call our office (564) 900-6565 to book! Check out our private tour’s page for more information.

Yes, there is a small bathroom (a.k.a. head) on each of our boats. We do encourage the use of on land facilities prior to departure, but the head is available if needed.

Great question! For all of our tours, we recommend dressing in layers so that you can adjust to whatever the weather conditions are on the day of your tour. For tours on our zodiac-style vessel, we provide cruiser suits, hats, and gloves to keep you warm and dry.

You are welcome to bring small bags/backpacks onboard, but please keep in mind that storage space is limited.

Yes! Please feel free to bring snacks and drinks. We highly recommend that drinks be in sealable containers. We cannot accommodate coolers due to limited space. We do not sell food or drinks on board.

Smoking, vaping, and consuming alcohol or marijuana are strictly prohibited on the boat. Thank you for your cooperation.

Absolutely! We encourage you to document your adventure. You may want to consider bringing a camera bag or dry storage bag. Alternatively, some customers will wear cameras around their neck underneath their jacket for added protection.

Children ages 6 and up are permitted on all public tours. Passengers ages 6 to 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

There is no age restriction for private tours, so feel free to invite friends and family of all ages on your personal getaway!

Our tours are not recommended during pregnancy or for anyone with back or neck injuries. If someone in your party will require additional assistance boarding the boat, please notify our office ahead of time.

It is extremely rare for our guests to experience seasickness. Our inland waters are relatively flat compared to big ocean swells that you may have experienced while boating in other locations. But if you are prone to seasickness, you may consider taking preventive medication, such as meclizine.

One thing we cannot control is the weather. On rare occasions, if we feel that the weather will present unsafe or unenjoyable conditions, we will cancel the tour. Passengers will be given the option to reschedule or receive a full refund.

For public tours, reservations may be cancelled or rescheduled up until 48 hours prior to your scheduled departure time for a full refund minus a credit card processing fee of $5 per person. Cancellations made within 48 hours of departure are nonrefundable and may not be rescheduled.

For private tours, reservations may be cancelled or rescheduled up until 2 weeks prior to your event date for a full refund minus a 3% credit card processing fee. Cancellations made within 2 weeks of the event date are nonrefundable and may not be rescheduled.
