April 7 – April 13

Springtime continues to amaze us with lots of whales around and lots of springtime colors in the islands with all of the plants and flowers blooming!

This week we saw orcas on 3 of our 4 tours. We had visits from the T124A, T049A, T123, T137, families of Bigg’s killer whales. Additionally, we got to see T087 “Harbeson”, a 63 year old male who was traveling with the T124A’s on Saturday’s tour.

On Saturday’s full day tour, after finishing up our lunch stop in Friday Harbor, we headed up San Juan Channel where we met up with the T049A family of orcas. This family is one of my favorites to encounter because they always seem to be so playful! And today was no different, we seemed to have caught them at ‘family snuggle time” as there was lots of rolling around and splashing. Little T049A6 “Charlie” was the star of the show though with lots of headstands, upside down swimming, and slapping his little pectoral flippers on the water. It was a sight to see!

We also had an awesome encounter with a gray whale on Friday’s tour in Rosario Strait. This particular gray whale’s tail was the whitest one I personally had ever seen, and because of this we could see it swimming under the water! It was amazing!

Our calendar is starting to fill up fast, don’t miss your chance for a spring time whale watching adventure!
